Space Saving Marvel: Sliding Bookshelf

The sliding bookshelf—a clever fusion of functionality and aesthetics—has become a sought-after addition to modern homes. Whether you’re looking to create a hidden passage or simply optimize space, this project is both practical and visually appealing. Let’s talk about the step-by-step process of designing and building a custom sliding bookshelf using my CNC machine.

The Problem: Laundry Room Separation

Our home had an open layout, connecting the living room and the laundry room. While this design allowed for seamless flow, it lacked privacy. We needed a solution that would close off the laundry area without compromising the walkway space. So I decided to find the next best solution: a sliding bookshelf—an elegant answer to our dilemma.

Design and Inspiration

Nate, the founder of ArkWorks, took charge of the project. The vision was clear: a sliding bookshelf that seamlessly blended with the living room decor. Unlike traditional MURPHY bookshelves that swing open, our design would slide horizontally, preserving floor space and eliminating the need for drilling into the tile floor.

Production Process

1. Design and Measurements

  1. We sketched the bookshelf design, considering dimensions, sliding mechanism, and aesthetics.
  2. Using CAD software, we translated the sketch into a digital blueprint, ready for CNC machining.

2. CNC Machining

  1. We loaded the birch plywood boards onto the CNC machine.
  2. The machine precisely cut out the bookshelf components, including shelves, sides, and sliding tracks.

3. Assembly

  1. We assembled the bookshelf frame, securing joints with screws and glue.
  2. We attached the rolling hardware to the sliding tracks.
  3. The shelves slid smoothly along the tracks, thanks to the precision-cut grooves made by our CNC machine.

4. Finishing Touches

  1. After sanding the wood, We applied paint furniture grade satin to match the paint of the surrounding walls to blend in seamlessly.
  2. The bookshelf was now ready for installation.

Installation and Final Thoughts

Our custom sliding bookshelf became a standout feature during house viewings.

Everyone admired its functionality and craftsmanship.

And the best part? If someone didn’t fancy the bookshelf, it could be easily removed without damaging the floor.

In summary, having a custom-built sliding bookshelf can offer the benefits of practicality, elegance, and versatility—a winning combination for any home.
